Conscience as a functional organ: understanding the phenomenon of conscience as the most important category of Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy

Vol. 30 Iss. 2 pp. 135144 | St. Petersburg State Institute of Psychology and Social Work | ISSN: 1993-8101

Abstract

The article discusses the famous statement by V. Frankl about conscience as a meaning organ. The concept of the functional organ developed by A.A. Ukhtomsky is revealed. Analogies are made of biological organs and organs that are not morphologically manifested. Conscience is described as a category of moral consciousness. It is argued that Conscience can be viewed as a functional body that co-adjusts the daily actions of a person with his system of values, ideas about higher principles and rules of life, recognizing them in the context of the higher beginning. The function of conscience and its expression outside are the imperatives of morality. Conscience is not a body that generates meanings in the truest sense of the word, but is cognized and deciphered by them. Meanings help to find connections with the laws of morality and unite the real and transcendent in a man.
